1946

After decorated service in the AIF and the RAAF during World War II, Maxwell Brown had returned to Shepparton as an employee of the Bank of NSW.

1946

The business we know today as MB+M Chartered Accountants, began on 29th June 1946 as an Accountancy – Taxation Business.
The firm was named after its founder Maxwell Brown. The original business was located at 370 Wyndham Street Shepparton, and the first client was the late Mr Rupert Wright (father of Lloyd and Graeme) who conducted a hardware business.

In those formative days the business consisted of one secretary, whose only technical aid was an old Imperial typewriter, and Maxwell Brown himself.

1954

Within eight years the business had grown and experienced an accommodation problem.

In July 1954 it moved to 24 Fryers Street Shepparton, opposite the entrance to the Victoria Hotel.

In country Victoria during the 1950s this was considered a prestigious location.

1956

Peter Mountjoy had the honour of carrying the Olympic flame into Shepparton and lighting the local cauldron prior to the 1956 Summer Olympic Games held in Melbourne.

1957

At the beginning of the new financial year, Peter Mountjoy joined Maxwell Brown.

Along with a change of the firms name to Maxwell Brown & Mountjoy, Peter provided another dimension to the growing business.

1962

It became apparent that they could no longer operate from the ground floor at 24 Fryers Street Shepparton, so an additional top floor was added to their premises.

1963

Maxwell Brown & Mountjoy continued to thrive, with Max and Peter key players in the development of some of the iconic areas of Shepparton.

This included property developments of Wanganui, Riverpark and Kialla Lakes Estates.

Max was instrumental in establishing the Star Bowl in Shepparton and enjoyed a lifelong participation in the game of ten-pin bowling.

1968

Max Brown became a member of the SPC Board of Directors from 1968 to 1973.

Max’s express purpose was to resolve the financial problems Shepparton’s signature firm SPC was experiencing.

Rod Gemmill admitted as a partner.

Rod Miller admitted as a partner.

1981

As well as being the founder of the firm, Max Brown was also the first partner to retire in July.

He remained with the firm as a consultant.

Peter Bicknell accepted a partnership in July.

1983

Peter Mountjoy retired as a partner in July, after a career which spanned 40 years, 1 week and 2 days as an accountant.

Michael Hall was admitted as a partner.

The partners of the day and Max Brown designed and built the premises at 21 Welsford Street Shepparton, which they occupied from February, 1984.

Rod Gemmill retired as a partner.

1989

Gregory Luscombe and Christopher Coe were admitted as partners in July.

The partners purchase two old houses at 17 and 19 Welsford Street planning to create newer and much larger premises.

The third of the Welsford Street locations became the base for Maxwell Brown & Mountjoy in November.

The Melbourne office was successfully established.

Financial Planning, which has now grown into our strong multi-disciplined Wealth Creation team, commenced at MB+M.

MB+M celebrates its 50th Anniversary!

Max Brown was still involved with the firm as a consultant and both he and Peter Mountjoy attended the 50th anniversary event.

The first female partners, Narelle Pesavento and Rebecca Woolstencroft, joined the partnership in July.

2007

MB+M again outgrew their premises and this time built a purpose designed building at 23 Nixon Street Shepparton in a beautiful location overlooking the Queens Gardens.

MB+M separated the two businesses – the Shepparton and Melbourne offices.

Narelle Pesavento and Rod Miller moved to the Melbourne office in June.

MB+M changed its structure from a Partnership to a Company.

There are now 4 Directors, 20 additional accountants as well as consultants and a range of vital team members

Peter Bicknell retired from MB+M in June.

Natalie Parker and Glenn Irvine joined as Directors in July.

On 4 July, we welcomed Jim Hepworth and his accountancy team into the MB+M family.
